Camps for Gifted Kids
I remember outside of Twirl’s kindergarten classroom was a sign: All children are gifted. Some just unwrap their packages a little later. I have to say, though, sometimes it’s very hard for camps to get out of the old school mindset of age-appropriate placement and into aptitude-appropriate placement. So there is a place for GT camps. I don’t think the issue is about whether or not your child is labeled GT in the school system. Rather, I think it’s about what you know about your child and his or her unique abilities. That said, here are some camps that specifically market themselves to the parents of those considered gifted and talented.
Summer Institute for the Gifted (at UT-Austin)
Aquatic Sciences Adventure Camp (at Texas State University)
Summer Wonders (in Austin)
Texas Brigades (based in San Antonio, with camps around Texas)
Prefreshman Engineering Program at UTSA (PREP)
Texas Mathworks Honors Program
