About

I am first and foremost the mom of two amazing children. Over the years, I’ve taught English in China, chased hurricanes, sold dishes, and once wore an oversized chicken suit and paraded around as Chuck the Duck. (I couldn’t make this stuff up.)  When my kids are at school, I am a writer and media relations pro. My twitter bio @MomOnMars says I’m a psychologist wannabe, lifelong learner and book lover…not necessarily in that order.

That pretty much sums it up.

SA Busy Kids started as a nugget of an idea back in 2004 when I picked up a book at a Houston museum that listed everything you could ever want to know about every camp available in the city.  I wished there were something like that in San Antonio.  In 2009, I decided it was time to grab my shovel and my pan and get to work.

Two things I think are important about SA Busy Kids:

  1. Camps are listed here because they are camps.  Not because they paid me anything to be on this site.
  2. People are strongly encouraged to post their own experiences with these camps.  What makes community is engaging with each other, supporting neighbors and sharing wisdom.  If you’ve had a good experience – or a bad one – please let the rest of us know.  I remember when I was looking at summer activities for my son, a mom told me how the lunch hour at one particular camp was spent in a huge gym, with the kids participating in activities with limited direction and supervision.  For her, it was a real selling point as her kids loved the “down time.” For me, it was a deciding factor because my son can’t handle those types of loosely-managed environments well. So, please. Stop by, look around and take a few minutes to leave a comment or two.
  3. I don’t have the resources to put together a quality control program that analyzes each camp for quality, safety and educational wherewithal. That’s a nice way to say I make no guarantees and assume no responsibility. Do your own research – check things out – and make sure you are comfortable with your choices.

This is a continuing work in progress.  Let me know what you think and how I can make this work best for you.

Have a sunny day!

  1. Congrats on your new blog!

  2. You totally ROCK! Congrats on your new blog, I love the art work on your home page. I look forward to passing on your great site

  3. If you decide to offer details on fun staycation ideas and ideas for b-day parties, you absolutely have to check out Tejas Rodeo…just 10 miles out Blanco Road from Loop 1604. Incredible authentic rodeo, bbq, and loads of fun for the kids. See real live longhorns, meet the cowboys and cowgirls and see how they prepare for the rodeo before the show, try your hand at mutton busting, even the mechanical bull. It is too fun..and CHEAP! Gate admission only $4.50 for kids and $9 for adults!

  4. You are amazing! I love this site and will visit often. First of all I agree with Leslie on the Tejas Rodeo, we went for the first time last year and absolutely love it, we take all our out of town guests there and when there is no one in town to take with, we go alone! The kids have a blast and so do we. I also wanted to let parents know about a drama camp we attended last year at the Boerne Community Theatre. It was a 2 week camp, M-F from 8 or 9am to 5pm and pretty structured, the kids worked very hard but learned a bunch and had a blast. It was really cool to see the production at the end of the 2 weeks, they sang, danced and acted and it was really enjoyable for all. They have 3 sessions and fill up fast so if you have kids that are interested in a drama camp, I would check it out. The website is http://www.boernetheatre.org and the phone # is 830-249-9166. Happy summer!
